81-89 High Street, Newport81-89 High Street, Newport. View taken from the northerly churchyard end looking up to New Street. The most interesting feature of this photo is that it shows 81-83 High Street was a plain plastered building with a jetty and no turret; totally different to the building we see today. The building was 're-erected by Edwin Whittingham in what he considered to be 17th century style. High Street celebration of coming of age, NewportCelebration of coming of age of Sir Thomas Boughey of Aqualate in 1857. The picture is of great interest in a number of ways. It shows the old market hall, built by William Adams and demolished in 1860. To the left can be seen the Kings Arms Inn (now a kebab shop) and further along T Gosnell's china shop. This had once been The Crown Inn and is currently an estate agents in 2008. On the right can be seen various buildings - all now demolished; one of which is the Raven & Bell Inn. Also visible are the different types of transport shown - coaches, wagons and horses. Of interest is that fact that that local people were very deferential to the neighbouring local wealthy families. They would create celebrations and decorations of the town to honour them. Local estates were large employers and their well off families patronised Newport businesses. Image of painting 1857 |
