Old School Houses Chetwynd near NewportThese houses were made into 3 dwellings when the 'new' Chetwynd School was built in the 1870s. Shown on the left Mrs Kate Whittall and family hens and pigs. These were tied cottages from Blue House Farm (Heber Hughes). The Whittall family lived in the centre house initially, then moved to the right house (3). These were demolished c. 1970s. Owner Duke of Sutherland prior to it being purchased in 1912 by the Lander family.The plaque above the front door has a coronet and 'M.S. 1810', which is a reference to the Marquis of Stafford - a title which the eldest son held prior to being created a duke. A part of the house probably pre-dates this, since the wing on the west side, has a timber frame construction. The land and buildings probably belonged to Lilleshall Abbey before it became part of the Duke's estate. and the deeds specifically mention the need to keep clear the water courses Image - 1912. |

Newport grain silo, Avenue Road, NewportHere shown being painted by Harold Mansell of Bromfields. In its heyday there were 14 workers filling the grain bins, which could take 5,000 tons of corn. The silo was built in World War ll to keep the country self- sufficient in grain. Currently the silo's owners are Mornflakes and it is used as a grain store for wheat and oats.
