High Street celebration of coming of age, NewportCelebration of coming of age of Sir Thomas Boughey of Aqualate in 1857. The picture is of great interest in a number of ways. It shows the old market hall, built by William Adams and demolished in 1860. To the left can be seen the Kings Arms Inn (now a kebab shop) and further along T Gosnell's china shop. This had once been The Crown Inn and is currently an estate agents in 2008. On the right can be seen various buildings - all now demolished; one of which is the Raven & Bell Inn. Also visible are the different types of transport shown - coaches, wagons and horses. Of interest is that fact that that local people were very deferential to the neighbouring local wealthy families. They would create celebrations and decorations of the town to honour them. Local estates were large employers and their well off families patronised Newport businesses. Image of painting 1857 |

Mummers, probably Newport costumesMummers costumes of 1891 - almost certainly based on Newport mummers costumes. At the first national Folklore Congress of 1891, Charlotte Burne's transcription of the Newport mummers play was performed. Charlotte's brother in law - Frank Milne - played Beelzebub. It is highly likely that these costumes were based on the costumes that Charlotte & Frank remembered from Newport in 1880s. Image 1891 |

2nd A.B Shropshire Volunteers cap badge, Woodcote, NewportFrom Woodcote area. Dated to 1860 - 1880. The Newport Rifle Corps were offered the use of the Woodcote rifle range after the Coppice Bank rifle butts could not be used. When the national movement to establish a Volunteer force got underway in 1859, Shropshire raised 18 companies of Royal Volunteers in 1859-60. For adminstrative reasons, these were organised into two battalions in 1860 called Administrative Battalions and this badge was worn by the 2nd A.B, which incorporated the northern companies of Rifle Volunteers (Mkt.Drayton, Whitchurch, Wellington, Hodnet, Wem, Ellesmere, Oswestry, Newport). All these companies wore this cap badge, which is rather an individual one. The 1st A.B had the southern companies. In 1880 the two Admin Battalions were renamed 1st and 2nd Volunteer Battalions, Kings Shropshire Light Infantry. The badge can therefore be dated clearly to 1860-1880. The term 'Rifle Corp.' was used briefly in the late 1850s when many Militia and Loyal Volunteer companies were being centralised into the Volunteer Battalions or simply disbanded as many Militia's were at that time. Butter (Puleston) Cross, NewportPuleston Cross in front of Mason's confectioners, Middle Row, 76 High Street. The Puleston Cross stands in front of Middle Row, but it is not in its original position. It was a cross denoting Newport's market place, and was moved to this position in 1633 when William Adams had the new market hall built in Market Square. It was moved to this position and a butter market was built around it hence its local name: the 'Butter Cross'. The butter market was demolished in 1860 and so the cross now stands in the open again. The cross is in memory of Sir John Puleston who lost his life during the reign of Edward 1 in Edward's campaigns against the Welsh. 1996 |

Audley Avenue, NewportAudley Avenue, Newport.. The road was created by the Marsh Trustees, when the Marsh was enclosed in 1764, and the 16 plots of land on either side were leased to farmers. In the mid 19th century this was used as a race track, and Audley Villa was it's grandstand. The road was renamed Cemetery Road when the cemetery was opened in 1850s and renamed again in 1870s Avenue Road. On the reverse of our postcard (sent from Aston Manor Farm, Field Aston) and perhaps relates to the homecoming of a WW1 soldier and the injuries of another. It says: " you will have a shock when you see my bald head, but one cannot help that I am thankful to be alive, for so many have gone home. I am new all over, new skin, all my nails are new, you can see where they have grown to, and new hair, when it comes love to all Winnie" |
