Shooting Butts ChetwyndIron shooting butts being restored by Newport History Society and "Task Force" project. These butts were used by Newport Volunteer Force in the mid 19th century and by the Home Guard in the 20th century. For 27 years he supported and instituted many Newport projects; the Literary Institute, Agricultural Society and Harper Adams College. He was the Director and Chairman of the Market Company, the Newport Brewery and the Royal Victoria Hotel. He was a county councillor and Chairman of the Newport Urban District Council. 1906 |

Forton Hall and All Saints churchForton Hall was built by a Mr Skrymsher of Norbury Manor at the end of the 17th century. A Roman road crossed the road to Eccleshall long ago. The original church was built c 1200, although it is very likely that there was an earlier one since it hasremains of a Saxon font, which probably indicates that Forton is an ancient settlement. The church was rebuilt in 1723 and five new bells were given to the church in 1729.The most prominent monument is the alabaster tomb of Thomas Skrymsher, knight of Aqualate and his wife, Anne, the daughter of Ralph Sneyd of Keele. Aqualate Hall, Forton, near NewportPre 1910, when the Hall was devastated by fire. Aqualate Hall was built for Edwin Skrymsher in the early seventeenth century. In the 18th century it was acquired by Sir George Boughey who had it rebuilt by John Nash in the Gothic style between 1800 and 1808. Here, showing the memorial to Thomas Talbot (died 30.6.1686) and erected by his wife, Frances. Part of the inscription reads, " They were a rare example of true conjugal love, whom, when death had cruelly parted, the grave more kindly reunited..... His hon'ble Lady, who was a saint before, began to be an angel now. She had now no care on earth and all her aim was heaven". The full text can be found in a Newport Advertiser article 31.08.1979. Paper mill, Tibberton, near NewportThe chimney of Tibberton paper mill being demolished. The chimney was 154ft, and was demolished by using the 'firing' technique (replacing the bricks with timber, which was then burnt away). Tibberton church is in the background. In the 20th century, the mill made sugar bags and wrapping paper. A previous chimney at this mill fell down during a gale in 1862 and killed a young husband and wife ( Joseph and Maria Hales). St Peters Church, Edgmond, near NewportSt Peters church, Edgmond. This is a Grade 1 listed building of the 14th century. It has a perpendicular tower, south porch, a nave with north and south aisles, and a dedicated chancel. The tower has perpendicular windows and a quatrefoil frieze below the battlements. Immediately to the south of the church stands the old rectory, which is now named the Provost's House. 1920s |
