George Williams 1892 (image)The life of an agricultural labourer was very hard; George Williams was only fifty when this photograph was taken. Many farm workers were driven mad by worry and hard work, and others ended up in the workhouse when older because they had no savings for their old age. There were no government pensions until the 20th Century. (Image courtesy of Shropshire Archives) Photo by L.H Buddicom via Lady J. Collecting water Tugford early 1900s (image)Most Shropshire villages didn't have water piped to taps until the mid 20th Century. Water had to be collected from streams or springs as here at Tugford. In the background is a dovecote from where pigeons fed off waste grain around Tugford mill which can be seen on the left. Pigeons were an common part of the Victorian diet.
