Welcome to the Portable Antiquities Scheme for Shropshire and Herefordshire. As partners of the project we will be putting up webpages about the Portable Antiquities Scheme periodically.
What is the Portable Antiquities Scheme?
The Portable Antiquities Scheme is a voluntary scheme to record archaeological objects found by members of the public in England and Wales. Every year many thousands of objects are discovered, many of these by metal-detector users, but also by people whilst out walking, gardening or going about their daily work. Such discoveries offer an important source for understanding our past.
Portable Antiquities Scheme in Shropshire
The PAS has been established in Shropshire since 2004 and Peter Reavill has held the post of Finds Liaison Officer since then. During the last three years Peter has handled hundreds of artefacts found by members of the public and recorded them on the PAS database. Some of the best and most important artefacts are show cased here but for full information on all the artefacts recorded please vist www.findsdatabase.org.uk, and search the database by county (Shropshire).
What should I do if I have found something and want to know more?
Peter runs monthly finds days on the 1st Friday of the month at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery between 1-4pm.
If you have found something and cannot bring it along to one of these events then please contact Peter for other dates and events
