The County museum service collections are an excellent record of the fauna found in Shropshire.
Shropshire has a huge variety of wildlife. The diversity of geography and geology in the county make for fertile breeding grounds for numerous species. This variety is reflected in the fact that Shropshire has 50 designated ‘wild places’ and over 37 nature reserves.
The Shropshire County Museums Service holds many items relating to past and current wildlife of Shropshire and their database can be searched here. Many of the plants and animals found within the database no longer exist such as the remains of 4 woolly mammoths found in a quarry at Condover.
The Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Museum is also home to numerous objects relating to the flora and fauna of Shropshire. The topic can be explored through images and paintings as well as objects such as the stuffed Great Auk, which is now extinct. You can search the collections of Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Museum through this website.
