Project Summary
A partnership of services from Shropshire County Council and the Borough of Telford & Wrekin created a ‘one stop shop’ for Discovering Shropshire’s History. It is an integrated on-line resource which allows a wide range of users to discover the variety and significance of Shropshire’s historical and cultural landscapes. The scope of the project covers the whole of the historic county of Shropshire, currently divided between the two local authorities.
Shropshire’s historic and cultural landscapes are unique. They demonstrate great diversity and quantity of material and include landscape remains of the human story in the county from prehistory to the present. Shropshire has been continuously inhabited for the last 10,000 years and there are surviving remains and evidence to represent all episodes of this long story. The archaeological and historic environment remains are of exceptional quality due to their state of preservation, condition, significance, potential and amenity value. The county has important and intact historic landscapes which enable the interaction between man and the landscape through time to be investigated, understood and enjoyed.
The project has created a resource that, for the first time, links information from the sites and monuments record with information from museum and archive catalogues to create an integrated data source. It represents a wide ranging partnership of services from the cultural and educational sectors, all committed to raising awareness of the importance of Shropshire’s history.
The project has increased awareness amongst the educational sector of the value and the use of Shropshire’s cultural resources. Education packs have been created for all ages. The on-line resource provides themed information linked to the requirements of the National Curriculum. Support and encouragement will be provided to local history and community groups, and individuals to further their research and develop their skills. The project aims to improve people’s awareness and understanding of the significance of Shropshire’s historic past. Its residents will be encouraged to get out and discover the county and its rich and varied heritage.
