This is the SNAP Project home page.
Newport History Society have digitised their photographic archive, and uploaded it onto this web site.
S.N.A.P. stands for Shropshire Newport Archive Photographs.
The project was a Local Heritage Initiative lottery-funded project, which ran from 2005-2008, and has allowed us to scan in photographs and slides from Newport History Society's archives and also from local people; we are very grateful for these donated images.
We have digitised over 3,000 images. The best images are in sixteen albums, however, the full database can be chosen by using the 'Advanced Search' option. For full details about viewing our images, please scroll down this page.

TO LOOK AT OUR PHOTOS THERE ARE TWO OPTIONS....
either
BROWSE THE ALBUMS
On the top left of this page, you will see a tab called 'THE ALBUMS'. Click on this, and then you will see a list of sixteen albums on the left-hand side of the next page (such as 'The Guildhall', 'Villages & Hamlets' or 'Leisure in Newport'). If you click on any of these titles it will take you directly to that album and its images. These albums are just a small selection of our photos - a sample of what we have on our database. To show the full image rather than just the 'thumbnail', either click on the image or on the title.
or
DO AN ADVANCED SEARCH
This search encompasses the whole of our 3,000+ images.
To do an 'Advanced Search', go to the top of any page. Click on 'Advanced Search'. Tick the 'Newport History Society' option and then type in your search word. The easiest is to use 'Keyword'. Then press 'Submit'. Now you will find every single image that we have on that particular subject.
We also have a 'Newport Heritage Trail Map', which links important images to maps of Newport. Follow the link on the left-hand side.
In addition, we also have a schools project (KS3) which focuses on our rural town at the time of the Industrial Revolution, and how even here in rural Shropshire the town and people's lives were drastically altered between 1750-1914. The text for this project was written by local historian - Malcolm Miles.
