Welcome to the Shropshire County Council Museum Service Rocks and Minerals page.
Shropshire's geology is amongst the most varied in Britain and the area has always been regarded as an excellent training ground for geologists.
The area was also important to the development of the science of geology with one of the 19th Century's best-known geologists, Roderick Impey Murchison, coming to study the rocks around Ludlow.
The MRC now holds a representative collection of the County's geology, as well as material from elsewhere.
We also have a mineral collection with over 1500 specimens, mostly collected in Britain. The collection illustrates the beauty and variety of commonly found minerals, many from local sources such as the Stiperstones that were collected as a result of mining activity in that area.
See our rocks and Minerals Album for the specimens of rocks and minerals that are included in our collection.
