Welcome to Shropshire County Council Fossils collection page.
Fossils are the remains of plants and animals that that have been preserved in stone and although the fossil record goes back hundreds of millions of years the process of fossilization is rare.
This means that whilst there are over 150,000 types of fossil known to science, this must represent only a small sample of the plants and animals that must have lived on Earth since life began.
Fossils make up the largest part of our geology collections, with about 30,000 specimens being housed at the MRC. Most of these come from South Shropshire and the Welsh Borders and they tell us a lot about the way that the place we call Shropshire must have once looked.
