Shropshire Historic Farmsteads Characterisation Project
Shropshire’s historic farmsteads make a fundamental contribution to local distinctiveness and a sense of place, through their varied forms and the way that they relate to the surrounding landscape and settlement pattern of Shropshire.
In order to further our understanding of this rich and varied Heritage Asset, the Shropshire Historic Environment Team, in partnership with English Heritage, has taken part in a Regional Development Agency funded West Midlands wide project mapping the distribution and character of Shropshire’s historic farmsteads.
The principal aims of the project have been to:
- Develop an integrated understanding of farmstead character and survival.
- Understand how farmsteads contribute to local distinctiveness and landscape character
- Understand the present use and social/economic role of historic farmsteads
- Inform strategic policy and guidance, and the drafting of local policy and guidance.
