This is a copy of Francis Sandford's drawing of 1658; the earliest close-up image of the Abbey. This shows the north aisle wall before it was modified by the addition of gables in the 1720s. A fragment of the great central tower, destroyed at the time of the dissolution, can be discerned as can a much larger fragment of one of the North transept walls than can be seen today. The patching up of the roof at the east end of the nave was probably needed after the demolition of the rest of the church to the east. Most intriguing is the flat top to the tower; evidence that it was once taller. Crenellations (in brick) were later added to "medievalize" the tower's appearance.
