Whitehall was built by Richard Prynce, a lawyer, in the 1570s on land, and using building stone, formerly belonging to the Abbey Church a few hundred yards away. The red sandstone was given a preservative coating of lime wash the remnants of which can still be seen in this 19th Century watercolour.
