Castle Gates, Shrewsbury (image)
This image shows the street with the south tower of the Lower Castle Gate still in place. By 1825 it was gone, as were the timber cottages lining the street further into town. The removal of the medieval gates and the lowering of the street gradient in the early 19th Century were attempts to cope with increased traffic.
