This long timber structure is reputed to have been the barn of a large mansion belonging to the Myttons which stood to its rear. Despite Coton Hill being physically detached from the rest of the town by marshy ground and the Bagley Brook, it has always been regarded as an integral part of the town and was depicted as such on early maps such as those by Burghley (1575) and Speed (1610).
