Shrewsbury Castle was originally built in timber by Roger de Montgomery, a kinsman of William the Conqueror, in the 11th Century. The great round towers were added in the mid 13th century and, after a period of decay between 1400-1565, it was restored in the late 16th century. It was at this time that the upper floor of the Great Hall was created. The Castle was refortified and defended during the Civil Wars, 1642-51. Further changes were made 1780-90 by Telford to turn it into a private house.
