Sam Brick of Highley joined the Worcestershire Imperial Yeomanry at the start of the 20th Century. This shows him outside the Malt Shovel in Highley, the pub kept by his parents. He may have served in the Boer War and he certainly attended training camps for the yeomanry in the following years. He rose to the rank of sergeant in World War One, but was released early to keep the Malt, the family business.
