1 High Street. Interior. First floor (after restoration). This is now the town's Council Chamber. Originally the floor would not have been here. The building was originally a medieval 'open hall' design, and you would have walked in on the ground floor and been able to look up at these ceiling timbers. Through dendrochronology, we know that these timbers were felled in 1487, and, bearing in mind the need to season the timber, we can assume that this main hall was erected probably around 1490.
