The Shakespeare Inn was built on the site of a house named 'Hoarwithy' which burnt down as a result of a fire at a tan yard at the back of the property. This building was erected for Edwin Humphries as a purpose-built inn. Notice the stabling to the right where the entrance to the car park is now.
