1 High Street. Interior, first floor - prior to restoration. This is now the Council Chamber. Looking westwards from the chimney end to a blue painted screen. This wall had originally been the end of the hall. In 1560s the hall was extended with another block further away from the main street, which had an upstairs and a downstairs. This was beyond this screen. If you go into the Council Chamber today, you will be able to recognise the 'duck under' beam in the lower right of this picture(now in the centre of the Council Chamber) with its low height and the curve on its underside, where someone decided to heighten it at the time that it was made into a doorway.
