Canal basin, Newport
Fisherman at Newport canal basin.
This canal linked the Shropshire network to the canal at Norbury Junction in 1835 and was owned by Shropshire Union Railway & Canal Company (later LMS). The canal was abandoned c.1944. In 1967 Newport Council purchased the part that was within the town's boundary and it is now maintained as a town amenity.From the collection of David McDougall.
