Jug purchased by Thomas, and commemorating his life - Thomas Hurd, a Newport master bricklayer (1796-1873). He lived and worked in the Sandhole area of the town (now Sandycroft area). His son, William, did not take up the brick-laying business, but had a shop in St Mary Street (now the Advertiser office) and was a general dealer. The last of the Hurds(in the newport area) - Catherine -had a shop in Upper Bar during the mid 20th century.
