This page gives details of how to make use of the HER/SMR, either by visiting it, or by requesting a proxy search, or by searching a copy of its records on the Internet.
Visiting
If you can visit the Historic Environment Record, then you have the most direct access to assistance and resources. The HER/SMR is based in the Environment Group's offices in Shirehall, Shrewsbury. It is usually open during normal office hours. Please make an appointment in advance, as there is limited space and staffing.
By phone, post or email
If you cannot visit the Historic Environment Record, you can ask us to search the system on your behalf, by contacting us by telephone, by post or by email. We can then send you the results of the search in hard copy or electronic format, as described above.
When you make an enquiry, you will usually need to say 'where, what and why'. That is:
what location or area you are interested in (National Grid References are a great help);
what type(s) of information you are interested in; and why you want the information.
Knowing why will help HER/SMR staff pitch their response to your needs, but it also helps to protect the county's archaeology and historic buildings.
Please always include a telephone number or email address in case anything needs to be clarified.

Over the internet
The HER/SMR is one of the data partners in DSH. We are still (early 2009) resolving some outstanding problems in the procedures for loading copies of the main HER/SMR database records into the website on a regular basis, but hope to have the system working smoothly by the end of this year. Users will then be able to access up to date copies of the HER/SMR database records in conjunction with the other records and resources from many other sources being placed on the DSH website.
In the meantime, the HER has also made available copies of its Monument Records to the "Heritage Gateway" website (www.heritagegateway.org.uk).
