This plot of land was used as a rubbish dump by the town for centuries and the accumulated waste was sold for manure. A small stream starting in the Square still runs under Gullet Passage and eventually exits at this point. It still ran down Barker Stree...
Mudholes was the place where, in Tudor times, much of the town's sewerage flowed into the Severn. A stream running from the Square joins the river here.
