Patent Rolls
The patent rolls are kept in the Public Record Office and contain the surviving letters patent. These were unsealed (ie open or patent) letters sent from the king to officials throughout the country. The Public Record Office has published abstracts of these from Medieval times to the 16th Century. The abstracts have been used to compile this list of entries that relate to Highley, Stottesdon, Kinlet, Billingsley and the surrounding parishes. The earliest published rolls are in Latin; abstracts of translations are included here. The majority of the published medieval abstracts have been made available on the internet by Prof G.R. Boynton and the University of Iowa Libraries (http://www.uiowa.edu/~acadtech/patentrolls). These have been used where they are available.
The list below has been divided into two parts for local places and individuals who may have been born locally. Typically each entry records the volume of the book where the inquisition is described, the date, the page number of the book and either the place or individual concerned. The date is sometimes in the form of the regnal year; thus 16 April 2 Ed II refers to the second year of the reign of Edward II (1308).
The current list is not complete.
