Archaeology Day 2011
This year's Archaeology Day was held at the Shirehall, Shrewsbury, on Saturday 12th November. The day included talks and displays about recent archaeological work in Shropshire and beyond.
Hugh Hannaford, Shropshire Council’s Senior Archaeological Projects Officer, outlined some of the fieldwork carried out by the Archaeology Service. Peter Reavill, the Portable Antiquities Officer for Herefordshire and Shropshire, gave an update on recent finds brought into the county's museums. Mick Krupa, Environmental Records Officer for Shropshire Council gave an account of his work in experimental iron smelting, and Colin Richards, the Historic Environment Manager for Shropshire Council talked about the Shropshire/Transylvania Building Skills Training Project. We also heard talks from Tim Greensmith of Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Mike Williams of English Heritage who gave an insight into research on the history and structure of the Ditherington Flax Mill and Maltings in Shrewsbury.
In between the talks visitors were able to view displays from the council’s Historic Environment Record, Shropshire Archives, and the Archaeology Service.
The event was organised by the Archaeology Service, Shropshire Council
