I am always on my guard as I walk along The Foregate. I have been attacked more than once. The Ireland brothers, Robert and my neighbour George, were so violent I had to seek shelter in a widow’s house. I fell foul of Robert Ireland again three years later outside the almshouses on Ox Lane when he used his knife on me. Then there was old Hatton who is feared by all on this street and with good reason. He has been known to kill his neighbour’s animals with a cross-bow. I fought with him when my men tried to plough one of my fields, and he, claiming it to be his own, tried to stop them. That dragon - his wife, and their daughter-in-law also joined in and we had to be separated by the parish constables!
