Most farms kept a greater variety of livestock than is found on farms today. This meant that the farm’s family could live off what the farm produced and could be more self sufficient. Pigs could be fed on whey left over from cheese and butter making, sheep would manure arable land and poultry would be fed on home-grown corn. Hay remained the main crop for livestock farmers to feed their animals.
