The Bull, Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury.
The photograph is undated, but is probably from the mid 1930’s.
The house was owned by Bass Worthington, Burton on Trent.
The Licensee at the time of the photo was James Woodnorth.
The sign over the door is offering accommodation for cyclists.
The house was de-licensed in 1937 and the licence transferred to the Harlescott, Shrewsbury.
At that time the government was trying to reduce the number of licensed premises. So in order for a new house to open, i.e. the Harlescott, the licence for the Bull was surrendered.
*At this house, in 1841, Benjamin Disraeli made his first speech, to the voters of Shrewsbury. He was successful at the parliamentary election.
I.C.Lloyd also records that upon closure, the house sign was removed to the Bull, Butchers Row.
Both houses were owned by cost-conscious Bass, and it was usual to use redundant assets in other houses.
