This may have started out life as a small kiln. At one point the tramway would have run over the top of the tally house to allow stone in trucks to have been dropped directly into canal barges. The tallyman who recorded all the traffic and allocated loads would have been warm but possibly deafened by the continuous noise! Ignore the iron bars at the openings – they are a later addition for visitor safety.
