There are 14 sets of wicket gates and flue openings. Each flue had a horizontal iron sliding plate as well as an upright one to control the draught. The upright plate, when not in use, was placed on the ledge above the opening . The wicket gates were used for bringing in limestone and taking out burnt lime. They were blocked up with bricks and sealed with clay or lime mortar during the firing process.
