In the yard is a saw pit. One man, the “top dog”, would saw from the top whilst the “under dog” had the messier job sawing from underneath and getting covered in sawdust. This was a job often given to new boys or as a punishment.
The yard itself is quite small because there were only men and horses and they only needed a small space to turn around in, unlike today’s tractors and combine harvesters.
The horse gin is the way that horse power was used to turn machinery kept in the barns in the days before steam power.
