A Market Town in the Industrial Revolution
This resource is intended for use mainly by Key stage 3 pupils (11-14 year olds) studying the impact of the Industrial Revolution. It aims to help pupils and teachers grasp the opportunities presented by changes to the draft programme of study for History. It provides historical sources, particularly images, for use and evaluation. Most importantly it allows pupils, especially those in North Shropshire, a chance to examine aspects of their local history and how they relate to a broader context.
The Industrial Revolution is often portrayed as something that only affected major cities like Manchester and coal producing areas like South Wales. These resources show that even small market towns could not escape its effects.
How to use the resources
There are web pages which relate to the themes of:
Trade & Industry
Transport
Law & order
Religion
Education
Health
These themes have been written especially for this web-site by local Newport historian Malcolm Miles and other members of Newport History Society. Each theme has been divided into two sections: 1750-1850 and 1850-1914. This enables an examination to be made of the changing ways in which Novaportians dealt with the problems and opportunities presented by the industrial age.
To access these themes click on the 'Related Webpages' button on the side menu and then 'Newport 1750-1914'.
Each theme is supported by an Album of additional annotated images relating to it; allowing a more in-depth exploration of those themes. To access these albums click on 'Albums' on the menu bar on each theme page.
