This is where it all began for me in Shrewsbury. I was a Somerset lad, but after a bit of trouble when I was down in London, it was to Shrewsbury I came in search of fame and fortune. I’ve done pretty well I must say – a respected burgess of the town no less. I started here as a vintner, or landlord, running the Sextry Inn with Thomas Lewis. The priests of St. Chad’s kept their valuables here in King Henry’s day. Now it serves Rowley’s ales! I married Joan across the road at St. Chad’s where my two infant children, Cleombrotus and Anne, are buried, like so many of the town’s children who have died young.
