This has been my home since 1618 – the Pheasant Inn. I married Joan, the daughter of its vintner, John Price. There was bad blood between John and me from the start. I married Joan for love but I was also promised a share of the inn. John went back on his word saying he needed it for his new young wife and that I was a man with a shady past who was planning to run off to Spain without Joan. We went to law over it and I came out of it well still with my share of the inn. Joan and her step-mother fought like cats and dogs for a while but we soon lived well enough under the same roof. John died eight years later, still in the Pheasant.
