Apart from the Pheasant, this is my favourite place in Shrewsbury. Standing here stirs my blood. The boats that dock here or at Frankwell are my link to that larger world out there. God didn’t make me to stay in one place for too long, and it’s more than ten years since I was first at the Sextry. Soon I’ll be sailing downriver, with Joan beside me, for Bristol. There’s many a Shrewsbury man who knows that great port. Gervase Harrison, vintner before me at the Pheasant, had contacts there and Richard Woolley of the Red Lion is now a vintner there. But I and Joan are only passing through - a new life in the American colonies lies ahead, but we’ll not forget Shrewsbury and our friends here.
