The Cluniac order of monks believed in frequent communal worship, so the nave was at the centre of priory life. St.Milburge’s had one of the longest naves in the country. In the early 13th Century Prior Humbert began a huge building programme which took forty years to complete. The priory church was completely rebuilt during this time. The most impressive site greeting pilgrims and visitors would have been the west front and its great door with its rows of decorated arches.
