Monks go straight from the dormitory into the church. The night stair leads directly into the south transept of the church. (The day stair leads to the cloister)
Monks sleep in daytime clothes. Beds are straw filled mattresses with blankets and a pillow. Younger monks’ beds are between those of older men, to help keep order. At the south end of the dormitory is the monks’ toilet (reredorter).
