The monks write or copy manuscripts. These are hand written on parchment and illustrated with expensive paints and gold leaf. The skilful monks that decorate them are called illuminators. Administration, physical work in the monastery buildings or in the monastery fields are also the duties of the monks. They could be working in the infirmary, tending to guests in the guest hall or to the poor in almshouses and the almonry.
