Before eating, monks wash their hands in the lavabo. They are not allowed to talk in the dining room. One way around this is sign language. They have only one meal a day in the winter and two in the summer. Monks do not eat meat except if they are ill and on particular feast days. Fish is very popular because it does not count as meat. Large fishponds are a common feature of monasteries. Perch and pike are the usual fish eaten.
