A cloister consisted usually of four corridors, with a courtyard in the middle. It was covered from the rain, but open to the air. The cloister is where monks read and occasionally wrote manuscripts. On one side was the priory church and on the other three sides were the domestic buildings where the monks ate, slept and studied or wrote religious manuscripts. The cloisters were also a place they could walk around meditating.
