The Sentinel Wagon Works were built in 1915 by a Glasgow engineering company who were looking for a site to produce new steam wagons. The works employed over 1000 people during the 1920’s but due to competition from petrol driven vehicles, went into liquidation in 1935.A new company was set up in 1936 to make motor buses, lorries and other products such as machine tools and, during the Second World War, Bren gun carriers.
In 1956, Rolls Royce acquired the site to produce diesel engines, and it was later sold to the Peterborough based company Perkins. The main factory site moved to the other side of the railway line, although part of the original factory site still remains. Much of it is now occupied by a supermarket.
