Records and memories of veterans of the King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
Pam Freeman, Project Officer for the Records and Memories of the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry (KSLI) project has met many people with some incredible memories of their time in military service.
She has recorded people’s own history during the 2nd WW, the Korean war, campaigns in Kenya and trips to many far flung places, at a time before worldwide travel was so accessible to many.
Pam has been moved by many memories of those who fought in trenches in Anzio, Italy, during the Second World War, of those who visited Belsen concentration camp during its liberation, and by a man who lost both his parents whilst he was fighting in Europe.
There have also been good memories of soldiers on National Service who were able to climb Mount Kilimanjaro during leave from their time in Bahrain and those who made lasting friendships and are still in touch today.
The project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, is a joint project with the Shropshire Regimental Museum and Shropshire County Council.
The project brings together memories of soldiers who served with the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry and includes cataloguing and conserving the records of the Regiment held at Shropshire Archives in Shrewsbury. Photographs from the collection are also to be digitised for use with the catalogue and on the Discovering Shropshire’s History website.
Cataloguing and Digitisation
Kerstin Treder, Cataloguing and Digitisation Assistant, has been responsible for cataloguing the many items within the collection and digitising the rare and important photographs of the collection.
Contributors and Volunteers
If you are interested in contributing to the project by recording your memories of your time with the KSLI or other Shropshire Regiments, or you would like to volunteer to assist with the cataloguing or transcribing of records please contact Peter Duckers, Curator of the Shropshire Regimental Museum.
