Shropshire Archaeological and Historical Society meetings and events
Winter meetings are held once a month, normally on the second Saturday. Local researchers and nationally known archaeologists and historians give lectures on local and more-than-local topics. Field meetings in the summer, under expert leadership, are made to archaeological sites, including excavations in progress, historic houses, churches and museums etc, both within the county and in adjacent areas.
Saturday April 10th 2010 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Shirehall at 11.00am for the AGM. The afternoon lecture is at 2.15pm in the Council Chamber, Shirehall, and the speaker will be Dr Toby Driver, Aerial Survey Project Manager with the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, who will speak on 'Aerial Reconnaissance and Archaeological Discovery along the Welsh Borders'
Saturday May 15th TITTERSTONE CLEE
Following on from his talk in March, Glynn Barratt will show us something of the rich time-depth of monuments surviving upon Titterstone Clee, spanning a period of some 4,000 years from the first age of metal to the Industrial Revolution. Meet 2.00pm at Clee Village car park, (next to the cattle grid at the east end of the village, by the Victoria Pub, SO 595753). Charge £3 per head, proceeds to the Titterstone Clee Historical Trust, or £5 for those who wish to become trust members. Minimum number 10. Book by 8th May.
Saturday June 12th DENBIGHSHIRE HILLFORTS
Following on from her lecture last year, Denbighshire County Archaeologist Fiona Gale will take us on a field trip to Caer Drewyn Hillfort, near Corwen. The Heather and Hillforts project has concentrated a lot of work at the site, both survey and practical management, which will be discussed during the visit. The track to the site is a steady climb and can be rough and wet, so please wear walking shoes./boots. If time allows there will be a follow up trip to Moel Fenlli in the Clwydian Range. Meet at the car park at Corwen Leisure Centre (SJ083443) at 2.30pm. Book by 5th June.
Saturday July 24th/25 CBA FESTIVAL OF BRITISH ARCHAEOLOGY
A week-end of events to coincide with the Council for British Archaeology’s Festival of British Archaeology. The free events will include guided walks, talks, and children’s activities, and will be based at St Mary’s Church, Shrewsbury. The events are being organized by this Society, with Shropshire Archives and Shropshire Council’s Archaeology Service and Historic Environment Team. Saturday August 21st PELL WALL GARDENS.
A chance to see the 19th century landscaped gardens at Pell Wall on the outskirts of Market Drayton. Mr John Udale, who owns the gardens, will give us an introduction to the fine landscape produced to complement Pell Wall Hall, the last completed domestic house designed by Sir John Soane, which was constructed from 1822–1828. Meet at Keepers Cottage, Pell Wall, Market Drayton, TF9 2AE, at 2.30pm, parking available. Take the A529 Newport road from Market Drayton and follow signs for Keepers Cottage and Pell Wall. Bring own refreshments, no dogs. Cost £2.50.
Saturday September 25th THE SHREWSBURY COALFIELD
Mining historian Mike Shaw will lead a walk to show the remains of a number of the collieries on the Shrewsbury Coalfield around Pontesbury. The main walk will take around 2 hours; for the enthusiasts, there is an optional hour extension afterwards! Meet 2.00pm at the old station, Pontesbury (on Station Road in Pontesbury, signposted to Farley, SJ 398063). Street parking available in Pontesbury; car sharing advisable. Book by September 18th.

SAHSoc Winter Programme 2010 - 2011
The first of the Society's Winter events will be on Saturday October 10th when the Society and the Friends of Shropshire Archives are organising a Shropshire Music Day at Concord College, Acton Burnell. This will include a full day of talks and demonstrations of Shropshire’s musical heritage. In addition there will be a concert in the evening by John Kirkpatrick, one of the most prominent members of the English folk music scene, and a long time Shropshire resident. Full details to follow.
