Society meetings and events
Winter meetings are held once a month, normally on the second Saturday. Local researchers and nationally known archaeologists and historians give lectures on local and more-than-local topics. Field meetings in the summer, under expert leadership, are made to archaeological sites, including excavations in progress, historic houses, churches and museums etc, both within the county and in adjacent areas.
Summer meetings 2008
Saturday May 10th Ditton Priors Walk. As a follow-up to her talk in March Di Bryan will lead a walk around the village. It is hoped to visit some of the houses that featured in the Project. Meet at the village hall which is sign-posted from the church. For those familiar with Ditton it is at the bottom of Station Road (SO 613893). Meet at 2.30pm. Tea will be provided. Book by May 3rd. Cost: £5.00
Saturday June 14th Ty Draw. ('Yonder House') At our social meeting in December our host, Graham Moss, told us about his latest restoration project, an isolated Welsh longhouse of cruck construction which has an open hall. He has offered to show us the house but as access is a little difficult he suggests that we meet at the car-park in Llanrhaeadr-Ym-Mochnant (SJ 123261) to condense the cars and he will lead us out. There is no electricity and so we cannot provide refreshments, but there are 3 good pubs in the village, cafes etc. There is much to see in the area. The village is very pleasant, the church is interesting and not far away is the famous waterfall at Pistyll Rhaeadr where there is a tea shop. Meet at 10.30am. Book by June 7th. Cost: £3.00
Saturday June 28th Local History Conference. Organised by Shropshire Archives. See Newsletter for details
Saturday July 12th Shropshire's Building Stones. This is a joint meeting with the Geological Society. English Heritage is compiling an atlas of English building stones and this excursion, part walking, part by car, will look at the Hoar Edge quarries, particularly those which produced the 'Harnage Slate', that highly fossilised roofing material, now so greatly prized. Meet at Bull Farm nr. Acton Burnell (SJ 557011) at 2.15pm. A 'field kitchen' tea will be provided and toilet facilities are available. Strong footwear is advised. Leader: David Pannett. No need to book. Cost: £2.50
Saturday August 16th The Severn by Canoe. To those who have already booked, Dr Nigel Baker will send particulars nearer the time. There are still places available. Please contact him on (01743) 761443

There will be an exhibition at the church and the book will be on sale at the reduced price of £5. Tea will be provided. Meet at the church (SJ 611040) at 2.30pm. Book by September 6th. Cost: £5.00
