Yes, the Olympics is coming to Shropshire!
Local groups, businesses and individuals will all be taking part in both the celebrations of sports and the arts and the 2012 Games themselves.
The County is offering to host seven training camps for teams coming to prepare and to take part in the London Games. Harper Adams University College is planning to provide a training camp for archery teams.
“The university College was thrilled to have been selected to support the Games. As Shropshire is the home of the modern Olympics it can be justifiably proud. Of the contribution its major institutions are making to the London Games”. Says Professor Wynne Jones, Principal.
Raising of the Olympic Handover flag
On the 20th August 2008 the Olympic Games was handed on from Beijing to London. Much Wenlock was one of over 500 locations worldwide chosen to celebrate the handover by raising of the London 2012 flag at the same time.
Councillor Barbara Craig, who represents the County on the West Midlands Leadership Group for the 2012 Games says:
Legacy of Dr. William Penny Brookes
“It was an honour for the Wenlock Olympian Society to have been granted this Olympic Handover Flag and for it to be raised on the Guildhall in Much Wenlock. This event marks the start of our journey towards the London 2012 Games and we are looking forward to sharing in these celebrations. We are very proud of the legacy that Dr. William Penny Brookes began when he started the Wenlock Olympian Games in 1850 and this is a wonderful opportunity to share the story of Penny Brookes with the rest of the world.”
Welcome to the international Olympic community
As London launches the 30th International Olympic Games in 2012 the Much Wenlock Olympian Society will have celebrated the 126th Wenlock Olympian Games. Helen Cromarty of the Wenlock Olympian Society Says
“William Penny Brookes had a vision which inspired Pierre de Coubertin to set up the Modern Olympic Games following his historic visit to Much Wenlock. We welcome the international Olympic community to the wealth of opportunities here in the county. We also welcome the opportunities which the links with the 2012 Games offer our town - the dream is coming home to Shropshire.”
