Yes, the Olympics is coming to Staffordshire and the West Midlands!
The area is hoping to host training camps for teams coming to train and prepare to take part in the London Games. Stoke-on-Trent City Council is holding talks to bring the Pakistan Olympic team to the city in 2012. The United States track and field team is planning to use Birmingham as its base.
New sporting facilities are being developed in the run-up to the 2012 Games. A new Sports Village is planned at Fenton Manor in Stoke-on-Trent. Building on Lee Pearson’s Paralympic success a new equestrian centre is planned for Leek in Staffordshire. In addition, plans for a new Hockey Centre at Cannock and the Football Association’s National Training Centre at Burton-upon-Trent are well underway.
Hoping to act as pre-Games training camps are Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton and the University of Wolverhampton’s Walsall Sports Centre.
Companies in the area will benefit too, providing goods and services to the Games. Local businesses are bidding for contracts: Barhale Construction plc of Walsall has recently won a multi-million pound contract to provide a deep foul sewer and pumping station for the 2012 Olympic Park.
