Understanding the character of historic farmsteads and the nature of the landscape they sit within has allowed us to create Farmstead Character Areas, which define the broad distribution of farmsteads in relation to their landscape context.
Farmstead Character Areas
The results have shown that areas with the highest densities of farmsteads typically include smaller-scale enclosed fields with large numbers of small to medium-scale farmstead types. At the other end of the spectrum areas with larger-scale enclosed fields have low densities of large-scale farmstead types, usually of a later date. It becomes clear that as time passed, fields increased in size, and where they did, holdings were amalgamated or enlarged and farmsteads became larger and more and more spread out.
