The Outer or Lower Castle Gate was probably rebuilt in the early Tudor Period, as witnessed by a Tudor Rose carving fixed to it. In addition there was a carved figure of an angel which survives today on the Old Market Hall. Most of the structure was removed in 1773 but the south tower survived until 1825. The name of the street at this point still reflects the previous existence of two gates.
