The Wrekin, along with the Ironbridge, is probably the most recognisable landmark in Shropshire. It juts out of a relatively flat landscape and rises to a height of 407 metres. At the summit of the hill there is an Iron Age hilfort. It has long been thought that the hillfort was the home of the Cornovii tribe. Recent hillfort research, however, suggests that most hillforts were not permanently occupied. It is likely that the hillfort was an administrative centre for the tribe, a trading centre and a place of refuge in times of war.
